p-Phenylenediamine is used to produce aramid polymer fibers (Kevlar), which are used for reinforcing tires, plastics and in other applications where high strength and modulus of elasticity are required. P-phenylenediamine which is a feedstock for synthesis of various polyurethanes, is synthesized by reaction of p-phenylenediamine with phosgene. Also p-phenylenediamine is used in synthesis of dyes, including hair dyes.
